ToggleHow Rama and Lakshmana Were Taken Away
During the great war between Lord Rama and Ravana, Ravana’s brother Ahiravana planned a secret attack. Ahiravana was a powerful magician and the king of Patala Lok, the underworld.
One night, using his magical powers, Ahiravana kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshmana while they were sleeping. He took them to Patala Lok because he wanted to sacrifice them to Goddess Mahamaya to gain more power.
Hanuman Goes to Patala Lok
When Hanuman came to know about this, he immediately decided to rescue Rama and Lakshmana. Without fear, Hanuman traveled to Patala Lok to face Ahiravana.
There, Hanuman learned that Ahiravana could not be killed easily. He would die only if five oil lamps burning in five different directions were put out at the exact same time. For a normal person, this was impossible.
Hanuman Becomes Panchmukhi
To solve this problem, Hanuman took a divine form with five faces, known as Panchmukhi Hanuman. Each face looked in a different direction.
With this powerful form, Hanuman blew out all five lamps at the same moment. As soon as the lamps went out, Ahiravana was destroyed.
Hanuman then safely rescued Lord Rama and Lakshmana and brought them back to the battlefield.
